What Are We Building and Whom Are We Serving?

Theologians Reflect on AI and Human Dignity
Jalandhar, August 14, 2026: An interactive session on “AI and Human Dignity” was held on August 14 for the second- and third-year theologians of Holy Trinity Major Seminary, Lidhran, Jalandhar, Punjab.

The session aimed to help the seminarians understand the opportunities and challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence in the light of Christian anthropology and the dignity of the human person.

The session was facilitated by Mr. Happy Shergill, Web, AI & Digital Systems Consultant, Simla-Chandigarh Diocese, who introduced the participants to the rapidly developing world of Artificial Intelligence and its implications for human life, ministry and society.

Reflecting on the theme “What are we building and whom are we serving?”, Mr. Shergill emphasised that every discussion on Artificial Intelligence must begin with the dignity and uniqueness of the human person.

Human dignity is not something given by technology, society or human achievement. We are created by God, loved by God and called to communion with Him; therefore, every human person possesses an irreplaceable and inviolable dignity.

Drawing inspiration from Magnifica Humanitas and its reflection on safeguarding human persons in the context of Artificial Intelligence, he highlighted the need to ensure that technological progress always remains at the service of the human person. No machine, algorithm or technological achievement can replace the uniqueness and worth of a human being created and loved by God.

Through practical examples and interactive discussions, the participants explored how AI can influence human relationships, education, communication, pastoral ministry and personal development.

The session emphasised that AI need not be approached with fear, but with responsibility, discernment and ethical awareness, so that technology can become a tool for human development and the service of others.

The active participation of the theologians made the session meaningful and engaging. Their questions and reflections demonstrated the importance of preparing future priests to understand emerging technologies and to accompany people wisely in a rapidly changing digital society.

At the conclusion of the session, Fr. Vianney and Bro. Albin Chacko OFM Cap. expressed words of appreciation to Mr. Shergill for making the subject of Artificial Intelligence accessible, practical and relevant to the formation of future priests.

The session concluded with a powerful reminder: we may build intelligent machines, but we must never lose sight of the One who created the human person.

Technology must serve humanity, because every human being is created by God, loved by God and therefore irreplaceable.
