Building Christ-Centred Marriages: Family Commission’s Formation Programme

The Family Commission of the Simla-Chandigarh Diocese successfully organised a three-day residential Marriage Preparation Course from 9 to 11 October 2026, aimed at preparing couples spiritually, psychologically, and practically for the Sacrament of Matrimony.

The programme brought together 30 participants from 14 parishes: Shimla (Chelsea), Solan, Kasauli, Baddi, Pehowa, Christ the King Cathedral, St. Anne’s, Mohali, Panchkula, Nayagaon, Bathinda, Sirsa, Samana, and Phatak Majri.
Through a well-balanced programme of prayer, insightful presentations, and meaningful discussions, the course offered the participants valuable guidance for their forthcoming marital journey.

The course commenced on Friday evening with registration and an engaging icebreaker session on “Family and God,” followed by foundational sessions on discerning one’s life partner and preparing intentionally for marriage.
A major highlight of the programme was the presence of Most Rev. Sahaya Thatheus Thomas, Bishop of Simla–Chandigarh, who celebrated the Holy Eucharist on Saturday morning. In his homily, the Bishop offered an inspiring pastoral reflection on the holiness of Christian marriage, emphasising commitment, mutual love, and the sacred vocation of married life. He also assured the couples of his heartfelt prayers and blessings as they prepared to embark on this important journey.
Throughout Saturday and Sunday, an experienced panel of resource persons addressed essential aspects of married and family life.

The sessions covered effective communication, financial management, conflict resolution, the Church’s Canon Law, and emotional well-being. Other important topics included creating a loving home for children, the significance of personal prayer, marital intimacy, natural family planning, and fostering mutual understanding between spouses.
The intensive formation programme concluded on Sunday afternoon with a session on understanding interpersonal differences between men and women, followed by an evaluation and the distribution of certificates to all 30 participants. The gathering ended with a fellowship lunch, celebrating the spirit of communion and togetherness.
The participants expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the comprehensive guidance, spiritual renewal, and practical insights they had received during the three-day course.
The programme served as a meaningful step towards helping couples build strong, loving, and Christ-centred families rooted in faith, mutual respect, and lifelong commitment.
